Overseas Vehicle Shipping: Container or RO/RO

There are 2 main options for overseas vehicle shipping: Roll-on/Roll-off (also abbreviated as RO/RO) and container shipping. Let's talk in details about them.

Roll-on Roll-off shipping utilizes specialized ocean ships to carry any kind of rolling cargo: cars, motorcycles, boats (on trailers or cradles), trucks, buses, motorhomes, travel trailers, agricultural machinery, mobile cranes, etc. As the name implies the cargo is rolled on the vessel at the port of loading and rolled off at the port of unloading. The RO/RO vessels have multiple levels to accommodate cargo of different sizes. Please, note that cargo sits INSIDE THE SHIP - it's not exposed to weather or sea water. For the shipping of a single unit - this is the most cost efficient way. The only disadvantage of RO/RO shipping is that cargo must travel completely empty of any personal items or parts. The other drawback is that Roll-on/Roll-off shipping is somewhat limited. It's popular in the routes between US East Coast and Western Europe but almost doesn't exist for any other destinations.

Overseas container shipping covers pretty much all ocean ports in the world. If your cargo cannot be shipped on RO/RO vessel it must be shipped inside the ocean container. The containers come in 3 sizes: 20' container ( 20' x 8' x 8'), 40' container (40' x 8' x 8') and open FLAT RACK container. The vehicles must be loaded and professionally secured inside the container at the port of origin and unpacked at the port of destination. Usually it's done by the specialized warehouses located near the major ocean ports. Since the labor and materials are involved in the loading and unloading the total cost for container shipping is usually higher then with RO/RO. And of course, with container shipping personal items, parts and household goods can be loaded in the vehicles or in the same container.
